Episode 195 – Giving Up Bum Ideas

I could just as easily have called this podcast Letting It All Hang Out because it’s about some beliefs I’ve maintained over the years about animal behavior and the bond that turned out to be flat out wrong. At least for me.  I’m not sure what relieves me more. That I was able to give up these bum ideas? Or that admitting I got it wrong isn’t that big a deal?

I like to say I did this as soon as I discovered that the belief wasn’t working. But that wasn’t the case. Granted once I let it go, I discovered that it was a lot easier than hanging on to it. But for all of these there was a period, and sometimes a lengthy period, during which it didn’t feel right any more—but not wrong enough that it seemed worth the cost of admitting that I’d made a mistake.

During this period the belief functioned like a mosquito in the bedroom at night. Sometimes it didn’t bother me at all. But once I became aware of it, it became harder and harder to ignore it. In other words, eventually what the faulty belief was costing me was more than I gained from hanging on to it.

In retrospect this was and is a sometimes laborious process. But so far for me at least, it’s been more than worth it.
