Episode 218 – Energy-Efficient Human-Animal Communication

When I was a veterinary student many years ago, I once commented to one of my professors that I envied the devotion of a certain classmate who always seemed to be dashing here and there pursuing, to use a phrase from The Little Prince, matters of great consequence. He replied, “Don’t ever confuse devotion with inefficiency.”

Of course, he was right. The amount of energy put into any display is the amount it takes that particular individual get the job done.  No more, no less.

Similar misinterpretation may occur when our animals display certain high-energy behaviors. Join me as I run an energy audit on  some particularly troublesome canine displays and discover the energy level can tell us about the animal’s motivation and prognosis.
