Episode 294 – The Great Awakening

The brief interludes of humming and chirping soundtrack you’ll hear with this podcast  are the constant sound of of the river in the valley below the house and the seasonal brook flowing across the back yard, all punctuated by birdsong.

And below are pictures of the intrepid mini-crocuses. The pale lavender ones were the first to show themselves beneath the snow in their usual location. But the yellow ones came as a complete surprise as few days later. Had I not slipped when I jumped off the stone wall near the woodpile, landed on my behind in a mound of soggy snow, and had to roll toward the hillside in order to right myself, I would have missed these even more petite heralds of spring amid the brush. I honestly can admit that this the first time that I’ve wound up soaking wet from a fall in a sloppy snow pile and felt grateful for the experience.

But typical for spring in New England, the day after I recorded this and took the second picture above, a cold front stormed in and the temperatures plummeted.

Not exactly what I had mind, but it is spring after all. Plus I knew the snow would melt as soon as the sun came up. And sure enough, it did.  🙂
