Given how often the word “fairness” comes up and the simplicity of its definition it should be the goal of any human- or nonhuman relationship. But it’s not that, well, simple. Treating another fairly is a relative concept. What seems fair to them may not seem fair to us at times or maybe all the times. And this also may occur among animals. It’s possible that Watson my hound thought it was unfair when when Whitman the cat used Watson’s ear for a pacifier. Nonetheless, he tolerated the inconvenience.
