Last summer when a collared lion was killed who was part of a research project, the media-fueled public outrage was so intense it was difficult not to image that something great would come out of the tragedy. Whether that indeed turns out to be true remains to be seen. But in the larger scheme of things an elegantly simple and practical program for saving lions that receives little attention has been up and running.
What does a picture of a soccer fan playing his vuvuzela–a word I mispronounced in the podcast in spite of my best intentions not to–and this example of its way-beyond-annoying sound have to do with Cecil’s legacy? For one thing, it reminds us that saving environments and all who live in them is much more than a media event. For another, the reality of these toys and the brave men using them to protect lions and people will remain long after memories of Cecil fade.
